As a follow up to her successful debut release The Escape Plan (2007), the launch of Emily’s new single You & I at the Spiegeltent in the 2010 Adelaide Fringe Festival, was met with high anticipation, and she didn’t disappoint. Propelled by an immediate radio response, this year will see Emily on the road again with her band The Clever Girls, as she promotes her latest single in the lead up to the release of her new album.
Having lived in both Melbourne and Adelaide, and toured extensively, Emily is a seasoned performer and a live pop-acoustic experience that lingers. On stage, Emily is undeniably compelling, and having completed an honours degree in Drama, she no stranger to embracing the role of an enchanting musical storyteller. Emily is quick to engage her audiences, with a Stevie Nicks paralleled onstage presence and an emotional inheritance in her vocals that is simultaneously a soft whisper and a raging soul. Couple that with a unique musical combination of indie-pop melodies accompanied by acoustic guitar, a dash of electronic and a hint of folk, and you can start to imagine the rich palette from which Emily Smart paints.
Smart's beautifully structured songs boast uncluttered arrangements with surprising little moments, and she has been described as ‘a master crafts maker of “rainy day” music’. Her lyrical intellect is stunning, and all this she delivers with the clear delicate voice of an ethereal poet and the strains of shining pop.
Her debut EP The Escape Plan, released in 2007, has been described as ‘beautifully crafted - with outstanding, memorable and moving lyrics’. The release received fantastic support from radio stations around Australia including Triple J, ABC & Nova, and the song Moments Like These helped score Emily a spot as a top five finalist in the 2007 Music Oz Awards singer/songwriter category.
Emily Smart & The Clever Girls have also performed in premier original music venues all over the country, including The Governor Hindmarsh, The Grace Emily, Jive, Manchester Lane, The Empress, The Toff in Town, The Republic Bar & Café, The Troubadour and the Brisbane Powerhouse.
Emily is currently working on her second release due out later this year.
